Masjid Toronto Adelaide: Expansion

Al-hamdulillah Masjid Toronto has been able to secure another unit neighboring our Masjid in Adelaide St. for $1.8 million allowing us to expand our prayer space. This additional space will help us accommodate our ever-growing community and the professionals working in Downtown Toronto. With the support of our congregation, we know it is possible. With $300,000 already deposited, we are in need of 1500 congregants to pledge $1000 each to help us cover the remaining $1.5 million. With 5 months ahead of us to make the payment, each person would be donating $200 a month (or $50 every Friday). More »

Embrace Syrian Newcomers Initiative

We have identified an urgent need to help resettle the Syrian newcomers who are already in Canada. They have been housed in hotels on an interim basis, but a significant number of them will be moving to apartments that they have chosen for themselves.  Over 200 families are moving out in the next 6-8 weeks and the first few weeks will be critical in ensuring a smooth and successful integration.  There is a total of 500 families currently in hotels.

How you can help:

1) Donate towards a welcome kit for a Syrian newcomer – This welcome kit will contain everything that a family needs to get set up in their new homes, from cooking pots and utensils to bedding. Halal food will also be provided for the first few days. The cost of 1 family kit is $250. All receipts are tax deductible and are also eligible for Zakat.

2) Sign up as a support volunteer – This will be to provide logistical support  (Kit and meal delivery in first 24 hours, and on going support to the host).

3) Sign up for the Ansar Muhajiroon program
– This is a longer term commitment to be assigned as a ‘host’ with a specific Syrian newcomer family and to help them integrate into the society. This is a very rewarding position with a support network established to help the host.  If you agree to be a host you will:

a) Undergo a background check
b) Sign up for 2 hour training session. Those who sign up to be a host will get a separate email with training materials.
c) Be generally available at least 2 weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to help the refugees in the first week
d) Speak Arabic or have someone in your family or circle of friends who speaks Arabic and is willing to help
